However, some unscrupulous sellers engage in odometer fraud, also known as clocking, to manipulate the odometer reading. Clocking a mechanical odometer is relatively easy. It involves removing the odometer, adjusting the gear system to display the desired value, and reinstalling the odometer.
Such deception can lead to unsuspecting buyers paying more for a vehicle than it is worth.
