You can drive your unregistered vehicle directly to the nearest Service NSW centre, authorized inspection station, or licensed CTP insurance provider. However, the journey must be the shortest and most direct route. If you need to make additional trips unrelated to the registration process, you’ll need an unregistered vehicle permit (UVP).
If your registration has been expired for an extended period, you may also require a roadworthy inspection (blue slip) to re-register.
Victoria (VIC)
Victoria follows a similar policy with no grace period for registration renewal. If your registration expires, you have until midnight on the expiry date to renew. After that, your vehicle is considered unregistered.
Fortunately, Victorian drivers don’t require a roadworthy certificate for renewal unless the registration has been lapsed for more than three months. However, driving an unregistered vehicle is prohibited unless you have a UVP or are traveling directly to a location for registration or repairs.
The fines in Victoria are steep, with unregistered driving penalties reaching $962. Renewal after three months requires additional inspections and roadworthy documentation.
Queensland (QLD)
In Queensland, there’s also no grace period for registration renewal. As soon as your registration expires, your vehicle is considered unregistered, and fines range from $313 to $417, depending on the vehicle size.
You have three months from the expiry date to renew your registration without needing a safety certificate. After three months, you’ll need a certificate of inspection or safety check to re-register.
Queensland law allows you to drive an unregistered vehicle directly to an inspection station or CTP insurance provider, provided you carry proof of insurance for the trip. Stopping anywhere else along the way is prohibited.
Australian Capital Territory (ACT)
In the ACT, registration expires at midnight on the due date, and there’s no grace period. Driving an unregistered vehicle results in fines of:
- $700 for operating an unregistered vehicle
- $973 for driving without Motor Accident Injuries (MAI) Insurance
If your registration is lapsed for more than 12 months, your vehicle will need to pass a roadworthy inspection before it can be re-registered. For vehicles under 12 months of lapsed registration, you can renew online without the need for an inspection.
South Australia (SA)
South Australia enforces a strict no-grace-period policy for registration. Once your registration expires, driving your vehicle is illegal and will result in fines of:
- $556 for driving an unregistered vehicle
- $944 for lacking mandatory CTP insurance
Fortunately, expired registrations can still be renewed online, and you’ll have two options:
- Renew from the expiry date and maintain the original registration timeline.
- Re-register from the date of payment with an updated expiry date (an additional fee applies).
If your registration lapses for an extended period, a roadworthy inspection is not required for re-registration in South Australia.
Western Australia (WA)
In WA, registration also expires at midnight on the due date, with no grace period. If your registration is not renewed within three months, you’ll need to undergo an inspection to re-register your vehicle.
During the three-month window, you can renew your registration without a vehicle inspection or plate return. However, after three months, the plates must be returned, and a roadworthy inspection is required.
Driving an unregistered vehicle is prohibited unless you obtain a temporary movement permit to transport it for inspection or repairs.
Northern Territory (NT)
In the NT, registration lapses at midnight on the expiry date, and there’s no grace period. Driving an unregistered vehicle can result in escalating fines based on how long the registration has been expired:
- $300 for up to one month of expired registration
- $800 for one to 12 months of expired registration
- $1,500 for more than 12 months of expired registration
Vehicles over 10 years old require annual roadworthy inspections. If your registration has lapsed for over 12 months, a full roadworthy check is mandatory before re-registration.
Tasmania (TAS)
Tasmania does not offer a grace period for registration. If your registration expires, you can renew it within three months without needing a roadworthy inspection. However, after three months, an inspection becomes mandatory.
